For years, my husband, Ian Crerar, competed in rally races. He occasionally suggested that I might come out and co-drive for him. Somehow the thought of sitting next to him while he drove like a mad man never really appealed to me. Also, our children were smaller and it would have been very tough to juggle them and racing.
In 2009, there was a 1 day regional rally at Shannonville Race Track. Since our children were getting bigger and since this event was so close to home, I decided that I would like to try my hand at rally but not as a co-driver. I wanted to be in the driver’s seat.
We had recently aquired A.C.P.’s old Evo IV, an Open class, podium winning car. I thought, this would be the perfect starter car for someone with absolutely no racing experience. : ) .Well, needless to say, I caught the racing bug big time. I had never had so much fun in my life.
Over the next few months I competed in 2 other regional races and 2 national races. At first I was just trying to get used to going fast and getting comfortable with sliding around on gravel roads.
Since then I have been working on improving my driving skills and getting faster. In 2010, I won the Novice Championship in the Ontario Performance Rally Series. That propelled me into the Expert category for 2011.
